This is Me Slacking Off

I've been slacking. I've let you down. I've let myself down, but honestly, at the end of a work day I don't want to get back on a computer. I'd rather lay on my couch and watch 4 episodes of The Young and the Restless back to back. It's true. It's not because I don't love blogging - I really do - it's because sometimes I'm a lazy human and want to shut my brain off while watching the residents of Genoa City make out and kill each other. Let's look at this sad kitten, shall we?

Today, I'm back. I'm back because one of my devoted readers sent a messenger my way to inform me that he's pissed I'm slacking off. I absolutely adore this guy and for that very reason, I'm rounding up some of my favourite things for today's post.

To start, let's take a gander at my pal Logan. Can I get an "amen" for the brains behind the Logan's Look blog? It's described as "A Gentlepup's Lifestyle and Fashion Blog" and is spilling over with pics of Logan, a mini poodle who loves to dress up. Look, I don't dress my dogs up (mostly because I'm afraid Gigi will kill me in my sleep if I do), but that doesn't mean I don't absolutely freggin' adore pups in outfits. Toss a bow tie on a poodle and my worlds collide.

Next, I'm gonna be real lazy and post a link to pictures from bestie's bachelorette this past weekend. I'm not downloading them (but plan to) for ya, just follow the link and feast your eyes on the babes in the handmade fascinators. Yes folks, Major Gal can sew....kinda. I'm better with a glue gun and glitter, but anyways. Here's one of the pics so you know which babes to look for.

Other news, I burned my tongue last night and today have been terrified to eat or drink anything above room temperature, so that's been fun. Anybody have ideas on how to cure scalded mouth skin? I'm afraid to Google it. Something hella dirty will surely infect my laptop if I do.

And if I'm trying to keep up with Major Gal's days of the week, Fridays are My Favourite Place days and that's pretty appropriate since this weekend I'm a) gettin' ma hair did; b) going to a dance recital and c) going to a baby shower. Hair news: I got coiffed last weekend for bestie's bachelorette and bought this A-MAZE-ING powder creating mega-volume. The bigger, the better with hair...and boobs in my opinion. Dance news: some of my best girlfriends teach (and one owns) a dance studio and this weekend is the recital. I love dance recitals. When I was a wee one, I loved getting to wear make up and fancy, sparkly, shiny costumes and now I love sitting in the audience watching a love of dance blossom on stage. Stoked for that. Baby news you ask? Well, one of those same dancer besties gave birth to a gorgeous baby girl 2.5 weeks early and so now we get to meet that baby at the baby shower this Sunday. Since my mama isn't with us anymore, I'm usually pretty glum on Mothers Day, so meeting the new baby daughter of a woman I've known since we were 6 years old and did a jazz routine to Madonna's Holiday with sounds like FUN to me!

Today, please go to buzzfeed.com and look at any of the videos/pics/posts on animals. I tweeted and shared a load of them today because they're so effing funny. Like dogs vs. celebrities in Who Wore it Better?

That's a lazy post from a slacking Major Gal my loves. Thanks to the faithful reader giving me a kick in the tush to get back on the blog. You're the best!!

Monday

This Valentino Bow - Happy Heels Monday

The sun is shining in Toronto and it smells like spring. Spring weather means shoving your winter wardrobe to the back of the closet (or packing it away and hanging up all your summer clothes - I'm a hoarder) and hitting your favourite nail salon - mine is A Perfect Pinky in Aurora, Ontario - for a much needed pedicure. Why should you get your toes pampered at the first sign of sunshine you ask? Because it's peep-toe shoe season. Bring on the comfy flip flips, preppy Sperrys, cute wedges and fierce open-toe pumps. In short, this is my favourite footwear season.

If I could live in a climate that never required socks, I'd be stoked. Never mind that my toes aren't lookin' so cute these days...I'll have to visit my Pinky girls asap. That being said, I have big plans for footwear this season and I want to introduce you to the Valentino works of art that bestie and I found this winter for her wedding - they're worth getting married for. Everyone, please meet the most sculptural footwear with stunning artistry ever created: the Valentino Couture Platform Bow Pump.

Bestie tried these ones on in a gorgeous sangria punch colour for size, but opted for the nude. I did what every MOH/bestie should do and talked her in to them after sending her a fiance a warning text that he'd have to pay the mortgage that month because I planned on bankrupting the bride for her wedding shoes. As for bridal footwear, did you go traditional white satin for your nuptials or did you do accent shoes? My cousin wore hot pink heels for her reception. Clearly, we're related.

I will admit that I met a relative of these shoes at a wedding in 2009. There were adorned with crystals and gems and I photographed them after exchanging emails strictly devoted to shoes with the bride. To top it off, the bride is a mega babe so of course she had killer shoes for her big day.

 The shoes
Pier and Emma - the bride and groom. Seriously, have you ever seen a more gorgeous couple?

Back to shoes......
And really, is there anything sweeter than a blush, patent pump with a bow? Major Gal doesn't think so.

And then these. Like how is a girl supposed to save for her future if gorgeous shoes like these keep finding me? I'm seriously a sucker for patent leather and aqua. I guess it's the tap dancer and water sign in me.

Bestie's wedding is five weeks away and today I begin the no carb diet. Mama has to slip this bod into a bikini for these nuptials so until I return from the Mayan Riviera, there will be no carbs. I'm thinking that if I blog about it and tweet about it and tell everyone I see that I'm not eating carbs, that somehow I'll be shamed into sticking to it. Sounds normal, right?

Pink satin with nude trim and gold sole? Hey yo!!!! On a related note, I dreamt on Friday night that my wedding (my non-existent, in my dreams wedding) was pink and gilded gold theme. Really gorgeous btw.

Ooootaaaay, that's enough shoe porn for today.

This is Crazy

Holy Hannah banana! I have been neglecting you my loves and I'm terribly sorry. It's amazing how busy life gets sometimes. I have no idea how people with kids get anything done. I'm just a fur mama and that's all I can handle at this point. Add to that winter illness and work and here we are...almost a month since my last post. I've even been neglecting some of my favourite fun things, like Pinterest. I used to have two minutes to spare and I'd spend them pinning pictures of animals smiling and flowers I want. Not lately. My boards are well, bored.

* Note: I've been trying to upload this post since Monday. None of the pictures were loading and I never had much time to spend on it. Here's to hoping this attempt works!

Anyways, here's what's been occupying my mind lately: bestie's wedding next month! We're almost in the final countdown to Matt and Rachel's wedding bonanza at the beach in Mexico. As MOH I'm planning her bachelorette and I'm stoked. The funny thing about party planning is how much it brings out a few usually hidden tendencies in people.  Have you ever seen a side of yourself you hadn't been previously introduced to while planning an important event? Did you ever find yourself in the marker aisle at the craft store comparing the subtle shades of blue ink to ensure the ones you chose for the guest book matched the colour of the bride's eyes? Oh...that's just me, eh? Well, let's meet some other party planning types.

For example, when I plan parties I become 1: The Beverly Hills party planner - meaning I forget there's a budget. My budget. My money and FYI, I don't have a Beverly Hills bank account. Since I'm so focused on the event for so long, I make purchases I'm not entirely sure I'll make use of but want to have "just in case."

I also become 2: The Magician party planner. This means basically I'm wishing up extravagant decor, elaborate themes and imagining it all goes perfectly. No, I am not a magician. My visions far exceed what's within my capabilities at this stage in life so at the end of each party, I'm disappointed. Really, there are worse problems to have in life than thinking you're the magician party planner. I liken this persona to Clark Griswold from the National Lampoon movies. He wants big and he wants the best and he can't keep up with his own ideas.

I've also been known to morph into 3: The Martha Wanna-be party planner. If you're stressing yourself out because all your party ideas come from Martha Stewart Living - get off the ledge right now. Martha has been in the biz for years. She has an uber talented team of artists, bakers, floral designers and super creative people working for her. When you see an image of a Martha styled party, you better believe it's not the work of an average person. There is only one Martha Stewart and that's okay. We don't need to pressure ourselves to live up to expectations we set for ourselves because of the drool-worthy images in her magazines, on her website or her blog. Breath in and say, "I must accept the fact that I'm not Martha, nor do I have her party planning budget." Everything is gonna be okay, I promise.

Surely you've all heard of bridezillas. You may even have met one. Their weddings are meticulously planned. Every detail surely looked to with some tears (apparently people fight when they're gettin' hitched y'all) and when the day arrives...well I'm not sure. Remember? I told you I'm not married? Sheesh, pay attention my loves.

So ya, I'm not engaged. I'm not planning a wedding. I'm not a bride. When I am in a bridal party however, I become 4: Maidzilla. I want the very best for the bride. I'm not generally a fan of Microsoft Excel (yuck, math tool) but when planning time arrives for the bridal shower and bachelorette, out comes Excel. Multiple pages in my Excel books. Countless emails to the bridal party, parents of the bride on speed dial, make up and hair crew researched and at the helm is Major Gal, known during the pre-wedding months as Maidzilla. Again, my grandiose visions of bachelorette parties on the Vegas strip or the beach in Cabo mean nothing I plan lives up to my own expectations. Interesting note, I can barely survive planning bridal showers and bachelorette parties. I'm so consumed with a guest list of 20 that I'm guessing a ballroom of 250 would send me to the looney bin, so Papa always suggests I elope. Truthfully, he probably doesn't want to feel my wrath the days leading up to my nuptials. Can't blame him.

Maybe you've been to a party where the 5: Oops party planner has appeared. In this case, you might run out of ice before the bar closes. You watch guests try to shove massive appetizers into their mouths from a silver serving tray when really it should be served as a sit down meal. Maybe the napkins don't match the flowers which don't match the invitations which don't match the balloons. And maybe, Oops doesn't care or just never thought about these details. I try to be hands-off in some cases and go down the Oops party planning journey, but I just can't. Maidzilla paired with The Martha Stewart Wanna-be means I honestly try to think of everything.

So here's the deal. I don't want any of you mumbling to yourselves on a busy street corner because the macaroons you ordered for your sister's baby shower weren't the exact shade of mint green you sent the baker. You should get what ya pay for in party planning, but not at the expense of your sanity. At least that's what I'm learning :)

Tuesday

This MOH

It's not everyday a girl is asked to be the maid of honour for her bestie. That day for me was last weekend when my hilarious friend Rach asked me to be her MOH. I was honoured and thrilled that I could finally talk to her about the engagement since I had been patiently waiting to squeal about the details ever since her bf (well fiance now) asked me to help him pick out a ring.

Imagine wanting to share news about something you've been waiting for for years and not being able to tell your bestie? It was torture!!! Lucky for me, Rach called as soon as it happened and I had a wee little Saturday night pinot grigio buzz as I stepped into the elevators and answered Rachel's call. We've already sprung into planning mode and I'm so freggin' excited. It's much more fun to plan for a big fancy wedding when you're not footing the bill. I get to offer up ideas and I don't have to pay for them, but I still get to enjoy them all. It's actually pretty perfect.

Rach and I have been friends since grade nine. We had dance, geography and gym class together and we were super competitive. In truth, I was a little scared of Rachel. She was a flawless ballerina and also a really great athlete. She was just - and still is - good at everything she did. This fall she blew me away with her flip cup skills at a back to school theme party we went to. I watched her shut down the competition and thought, "That's MY girl!" Next spring I'll watch her marry her handsome bf and I know I'll be thinking to myself, "That's my bride. Isn't she beautiful?"

Friday

This Perfect Pinky

Tomorrow Rach and I are going to one of our favourite places - our nail salon in Aurora. We've been going there for three years now and every visit is an adventure. Recently relocated further south on Yonge Street, this Aurora beauty staple has been pampering women for over a decade. The clientele is dedicated, not only because of the great work the pinky gals do, but because you're guaranteed a truly entertaining spa treatment when you book an appointment.

The women who work at A Perfect Pinky Plus make each visit a joy for me. We laugh, we pick the perfect polish, we catch up on what's been happening since I've moved downtown and I usually end up sticking around well after my polish is dry, just to chat. My cousin travels from Bradford to get her nails done at the salon and I'm coming up from Toronto tomorrow for a manicure and some laughs. Rach and I both live in the city and it's not as if there's a shortage of places to get your nails done, but when we planned to hang out I knew Rach had to see how gorgeous the new Pinky location is. Plus, the girls always ask me how Rach is doing when I go in without her. They actually care - and that's worth the outrageous price of gas for me to drive up.

I've never been a person people remember meeting but on my second visit, the entire shop remembered me and made me feel so welcome - as if I'd been a client for years. Those of us who go to the Pinky know what a great place it is. There are loads of nail salons to choose from, but the women at the Pinky truly make your visit a happy experience. In December, I always book my appointments for Christmas Eve so I can see my favourite beauty girls on my favourite day of the year. There's always bustle in the salon and I've never felt rushed. It's one of my happy places :)

If you're ever in the area, check them out. I promise, you'll have a blast and you'll look fantastic!
